Make-up & Jewellery Organization

Here are a few things I have learnt about make-up and accessories organization:

· Make-up and jewellery looks pretty. So they need to be displayed, not hidden away in drawers and cabinets.

· They also need to be displayed because you need to see your entire collection every time you dress up. If you are a shopaholic like me, which you probably are if you are dealing with storage problems, you won’t even remember what all you own. So, it is important that everything you own is laid out in front of you, so you can choose justly.

· Innovative storage solutions can act as decor! Baskets, cute boxes, vintage chests, DIY storage – wonderfully satisfying ways of organizing things make your room artsy and add that personal touch.

After years of dealing with broken, lost, tangled up jewellery and cosmetics, I decided to bring them all out. I love baskets and when I saw so many cute baskets at the Dollar Store, I decided to change the way I did things. And I am so happy! I have everything organized and laid out in front of me. I do not repeat things and give other items ‘a chance’. That also gives me the satisfaction that I am using all the stuff I have and have not merely wasted money on things I am never able to use.

What are your storage problems? And ideas?

Embellish Me

Statement neckpieces made an entry into the fashion scene almost a year ago and are still in rage. Blinding glass crystals, huge neon beads to brew of gold and glitter; as bling-y as they can get. One statement piece can transform a plain dress into a glamorous one. Wear one over a tee and denims and you convert a plain casual outfit into a classy outfit.

I always strive to bring in Indian ethnic elements into regular western outfits. One way of doing this is via jewellery. Wear a piece of Indian jewellery like painted wooden bangles, silver jhumkas or beaded neckpiece with a carved metal pendant to change the whole look from Western to Bohemia or Fusion. The more ethnic or tribal, the better.

Think beads, thick threads, loud pendants and lots of color.

Add color to a plain outfit by adding a multicoloured piece.

Go wild with colors and textures. Think out of the box. Make unusual pairings.

There is no dearth of junk jewellery in India. If you look for these in malls and department stores, you are likely to find what everyone else is wearing. Move away from the regular. Go to old markets. Visit exhibitions. Hit the streets. Watch out for steals on your visits to different cities (and countries) and treasure those pieces. You will find the real loot there.

On the recent India trip, I rummaged around whatever neighbourhood I was in, attacking street vendors and buying whatever my heart fell in love with and protected those pieces like my second life. I found wonderful pieces in the most unexpected places.

Here are some of them. Just some of them.

So go ahead. Add bling to your look. Go wild or go classy.
